Microsoft Windows 10 or later (64-bit). Magic File Renamer 8 is a Windows desktop
application.
Downloads already include the .NET runtime — no separate Microsoft .NET install is
required.
Download packages
Every package includes both the desktop app (mfr.exe) and the
command-line tool (mfrc.exe) in the same folder. There is no
separate CLI-only download.
Setup program (setup_mfr_…-win-x64.exe):
installs under Program Files\FineBytes\MFR8, adds Start menu
shortcuts, and uninstalls from Windows Installed apps.
Portable zip (mfr-…-win-x64.zip): extract
anywhere and run mfr.exe.
Installation
Install from the package you received (setup program or portable zip). Follow the
instructions that accompany that package.
Do not install MFR 8 into the same folder as an existing MFR 7 (or earlier)
installation. Keep versions in separate directories so program files do not overwrite each
other.
After install, launch Magic File Renamer from the Start menu shortcut, desktop shortcut, or
mfr.exe in the install folder. Run the CLI as
mfrc.exe from that same folder (or add the folder to your PATH).
On first launch the app writes preferences under
%AppData%\finebytes\mfr\ (for example
config.json). Presets and logs use the same finebytes data area.
Uninstallation
If you used a setup program, uninstall from Windows
Apps & features / Installed apps.
If you used a portable zip, delete the extracted folder. Removing the program does not
always delete AppData preferences, presets, or logs. Delete the finebytes MFR folder under
AppData if you want a clean slate.
Version compatibility
MFR 8 is a new product generation with its own JSON preferences and presets. A one-shot
Import from MFR 7 offer can convert ProgramData
.mps presets; there is no ongoing dual-format loader. See
Migrating from MFR 7 for the old→new feature map.
MFR 7 and MFR 8 can sit side-by-side on the same PC when installed in different folders.
Shortcuts and window titles include version information so you can tell them apart.
You can keep MFR 7 installed while you move workflows to MFR 8, then uninstall the older
version when you no longer need it.
File Explorer right-click menu
Setup can add a
Rename with MFR 8 item to the right-click menu for files and
folders in File Explorer (the Integrate checkbox on Additional Tasks).
Choosing it opens Magic File Renamer and puts the selected items on the Rename List.
Unchecking Integrate on install or upgrade removes that menu item if it was already
registered. Uninstall always removes it, even if it was turned on later in Options.
You can turn the menu item on or off in
Options under Windows Integration; Magic File Renamer
must be started as administrator to change it.
The portable zip does not add the menu automatically — run as administrator and enable it in
Options.
