Bought on or after November 1, 2024? Use Activate 8 free (same order email + machine code).
Older seats (including MFR 5/6 and older MFR 7): Upgrade for $15, then Activate 7 or 8 (or both over time, within your seat count).

If you do not have a license yet, buy Pro on Unlock Pro ($30 for one computer), or use the upgrade path above when you already have an older seat.
In MFR, choose Help → Unlock Pro…, then I already bought and want to get a license file. That opens Activate Magic File Renamer 8. Type the email you used for the order. The page already shows this PC’s machine code (it starts with 8).

Wait for the license email (check spam if it is slow).
Save the mfr8.license.txt attachment somewhere you can find it (for example Downloads or Documents).
In MFR, choose Help → Unlock Pro…, then I have a license file and want to unlock Pro on this PC. Open the file you saved. If it is valid, Pro unlocks right away. About and the status bar show Pro.

After Pro is unlocked, the same window is Help → License Information…. It shows your Pro details, issue date, and this PC’s machine code.

After an OS reinstall on the same PC, the machine code usually matches - open the same file again (or Activate 8 again). That is not a new purchase.
You may move Pro to another PC: uninstall MFR from the old one, install on the new one, then Activate 8 with that PC’s machine code and open the new license file.
Running Pro on two computers at the same time needs another Pro purchase.
